Green Kids!

This morning we had a recycling presentation from Green Kids. The grade 4-6 classes met in the gym for a drama presentation about recycling. The people who did the presentation, their names were Kent and Dana. There were some kids from some of the grades 4s, 5s and 6s who volunteered to be part of a skit. The skit was about an outdoor concert and everyone would grab their drinks, and when they were done drinking them, they would throw their drinks over their shoulder, and leave. Then Gus threw everything in the garbage. Gertie explained that he needed to recycle instead of throwing everything in the garbage. These are some of the people who did the skit: Brooke, Madison, Emily s., Hannah, Allison, Renee, Mathew, Mathew, Ashley, Riley, Nathan and Braden. D.

We were 1 of 3 classes to have Kent and Dana come to our room and do a workshop. We got to do a lot of improvisation. We learned about what we can recycle, the process of recycling and what recycled things can turn into. It was an awesome time. Remember to recycle! Thanks Mrs. Dent Scarcello for getting Dana and Kent to come to our school.

Education for Change Speaking Tour

On Friday Bird's Hill School welcomed two special guests, Tina and O'Neil from Free the Children. They are part of the Education for Change Speaking Tour and are in our province to share their passion for social change and empowering youth. They are visiting nine schools in Manitoba and we are the only school in the River East Transcona School Division to have this opportunity!

To kick off our morning, the grade five and six students were part of a keynote presentation where Tina and O'Neil got us thinking about how we can make a difference by helping others less fortunate than ourselves. They spoke about how knowledge is power and that all children have a right to an education. After the presentation 24 grade six S.P.I.N. Club members participated in a workshop where students had time to think about what their passion was and to share their opinions about social issues. Wow, what an awesome day full of energy and important messages. We thank Tina and O'Neil for inspiring us to believe we can make a difference. Our S.P.I.N. Club members can't wait to get started on our first campaign . . . We Scare Hunger!

What a year to remember!

Crackers......open on June 28





On January 7^th we made crackers. But not the kind of crackers you eat. With these crackers, you pull the ends to crack them open.  We wrote a New Year's resolution on the outside and we were allowed to put little things inside, make and decorate them with tissue paper. The supplies we used to make this were: pipe cleaners, toilet paper rolls, and tissue paper. Some people were surprised that Mrs.Tresoor actually remembered to bring them out, and others were surprised when they saw what they had put in there. Some people put some confetti inside, some people put fans inside, Hunter put in a paper duck, and Colin made a paper airplane to put inside.

Today (June28th) we got to sign autographs. Not because we are famous, but because it is the end of the year! We got to write messages or even just sign your name, some people wrote “Have a great summer”!  Some pages were completely full others weren’t. Everyone was running around to get people to sign their books. It was a great way to remember our friends!



Way, way back on the first day of school, we took a picture on our play-structure. Now on the last day of school (actually it was on the 27^th), we took another picture. The reason we did this on the second last day was because everyone was there, and we knew for sure not everyone was going to be here on the last day of school. It was fairly hard to get into the exact same position, but most of our class managed. Alex’s position was hanging off of the pole, and Melina’s position was beside the pink ladder crouching next to Hunter.

On Thursday we had our class party! We watched a movie, had treats, cleaned our desks, and hung out with our friends! It was an AWESOME way to end the year!

Outreach Speaker Amber Schuler Visits BHS!

Hello blog readers, I will tell you about a special guest that visited our school.

Today, a lady named Amber Schuler came to tell us about “Free the children”. If you didn’t know what free the children is, then I will tell you. Free the children is a non-profit organization to help people (focused on children) that don’t have enough things to survive. It started in 1995, so it has lasted 18 years.

Amber told us this story:

In 1987, four year old Iqbal Masih (pronounced Ikball Masee) was a boy who lived in a poor family. There was not a school nearby, and the closest one was multiple kilometers away. All the water was so dirty it looked like chocolate milk. These men, one day, had come to Iqbal’s small village to “give children a better life” (go to school, give them clean water and good food etc.). Once the men came to Iqbal’s house, his parents agreed hoping it would be better for their small Iqbal. His parents were given a contract, but they had not gone to school and did not know how to read, so they signed the contract with a fingerprint. The parents were paid 600 rupees (approximately $16 dollars) Iqbal was taken to a gloomy carpet factory, where his nimble miniature hands tied knots for carpets. He was all chained up to prevent him from egress (to leave).  He miraculously escaped the factory in 1993 (age 10) and for two years, traveled around telling the world about child labour and how wrong it was. In 1995 (age 12) he returned to his home in Pakistan to see his family. He was riding his bike with his cousins to visit his uncle. Laughing, having fun, riding his bike with his cousins that was the life. During the ride, a horrible thing happened. Suddenly, his cousin was shot in the arm and Iqbal was fatally shot by who is thought to be the carpet factory men for exposing the child labour secret. Halfway around the world, in Toronto Canada, a twelve year old boy by the name of Craig Keilburger, the same age as Iqbal, was searching in the newspaper before school for his morning comics and saw the horrific headline. TWELVE YEAR OLD PAKISTAN BOY MURDERED!!!  Craig went to school that day and asked his teacher if he could explain his reading. His teacher said yes, and he read the article aloud. After he read the article, he explained how important he thought it was to start a club to help the needy people of the world of all of these horrifying things. He asked if anyone wanted to join, and gradually, 11 hands of Craig’s friends rose. Their club was named “twelve twelve year olds” but when one turned thirteen, it was changed to free the children. Today, only Craig remains in the group, but plenty others have joined.

I got a very powerful message when this was told to us. At our school we have a club and we fundraise to donate to free the children, and that is how we got Amber to come to our school. We have helped to start building a whole school in El Trapiche, Nicaragua and when we do another fundraiser, this makes me want to be part of it more than before. I hope free the children can help many more places worldwide. People like Craig make this world a lot better. This was a very powerful message to everyone in our class and the other two grades that came.

Village Group Activities

Hey 5T blog readers, I’m going to talk about village groups. We did lots of different kinds of stations in different classes and some of them were even in the hallway. No village group went to all of the stations. There were seventeen stations and everyone went to eleven. Everyone met in the gym so we could find everyone in our village group. I am in village number ten. After Mrs. Rand explained what we were doing we went to our first station. The grade sixes were in charge of the stations and the grade fives were in charge of making sure everyone got to their next station. Some of my favourite stations were beach ball volleyball, magic tongue sticker outer, and long rope skipping. For beach ball volleyball it was more like keep up. There were two games going on. All you had to do was hit up the ball to the other side of the mat. All the morning was fun and exciting. It is good to have village groups so you can meet people from other grades. I can’t wait to have village groups next. I wonder what we will do next?

Gymnastics Club

The Grades 3 to 6 practiced long and hard before school to improve our gymnastics skills. Before school we did lots of practicing on bridges, somersaults, teddy bear stands, the cartwheel the back walkover  and many other skills. There are levels one, two and three depending on what you can do. The warm up routine gets you warmed up and all the schools will be doing it at the same time.  We are going to show our creative routine. We just showed it to the whole school . On thursday night we will perform for our parents and for lots of other people. I'm kind of nervous because  there is going to be a big crowd. I was scared performing for the school I can't imagine performing for many more people. Our routine is amazing and our warm up routine is really good to. Our creative routine is going to be the best because we are the only school that is doing that routine. I think it looks really good when we do it at the same time.I really enjoyed gymnastics club. Thanks to Mrs. Rand and Mrs. Ilchena for putting it all together.           By: Sadie 

Photo Booth Experience



Awesome bookmarks!

Hey what’s up room 30 blog readers? Yesterday we had a special event with our friends and little buddies. The photo booth was for I love to read month.  We posed with our little buddies. First we pointed at our eyes, and then we made a heart with your fingers, then we put up two fingers and finally we held up our books. The next day we got to go to the photo booth again but this time with our friends in grade 5. You could be with 2-4 people so I went with Hunter. The photo booth belonged to Ms. Wasney’s sister Leah. It was awesome we got our own personal bookmarks!!! Thanks to Leah for giving us these awesome gifts!   By Braden

I was really nervous but I’m glad I did it.

Did you find the cycle stack difficult?

It was difficult at first, but once you got the hang of it, it was pretty easy

No, because that was my record!

What was the best part about cupstacking?

The best part was learning how to do the whole cycle.

Star Dome

Hello Str00m30 blog readers!

Have you ever been to a star dome? How about going in a star dome with a group of your best friends? Well that’s what we did today!

There was a star dome in the school gym today, and classes took turns going in and listening to stories in them. There was a man named Darren, and he guided us through old tales of the stars and how it came to be.

We listened to him tell a story about a winter that never ended. The squirrel thought that the summer birds brought summer, but the birds hadn’t come back. Squirrel went looking for them, and found a cave. He looked into the cave and he heard the bird singing a beautiful song. He followed the song and at the end he saw the summer birds. The winter god had trapped the summer birds, so that summer cannot come back over the land. The birds were tied up in some thin string, but it was too thick to break free of. Squirrel came over to the birds and chewed all of the string off, and the birds flew as fast as they could out of there.  Squirrel was to slow to come out of the cave and the winter god started to chase him at the sight of him coming out of the cave. Squirrel climbed up the top of the tree, but the winter god shot an arrow, and barely hit the squirrel and squirrel flew up into the air. Squirrel got pinned to the top of the sky, and now can be seen as what we commonly call, the big dipper.

I loved doing this activity. I hope we can do it again. It was like having a planetarium in our school!

Abilities Awareness Day

Today we had an Abilities awareness day. There were seven stations that taught you about other people’s different abilities. In the front foyer Mrs. Lester came In with some wheelchairs, but before we got to ride them she showed us a power point on what different things people used to get around. Some of them were wheelchair, scooter, walker and a cane. Some people just use a cane and a walker for balance because they can’t balance that good. After the power point we got to pick partners and go on an obstacle course. We had to go down the hallway, get a drink of water then go up the ramp coming from the outside doors, turn around and the go down. When we got down we had to go into the handicapped bathroom and close the door the after that you had to open the door and it was hard. We had to go down the hallway and go in and out and in of the front entrance (we have two sets of doors) and then we had to switch with a partner. Remember we had to open doors and move the wheelchair with only our hands!

In room 8 we had a lesson on Vision. We all got in to groups.  Ryan.W, Cam and I were in a group.  Everybody got goggles that had a special amount of vision. There wasn’t enough goggles to go around so we got to go into the hallway and we took turns blind folding each other and “being blind.” We had a stick to navigate where we were and one of us made a buzzing sound with a battery and a buzzer. Then we had to go back to room 8 and let another group try.

And the other stations were:  Computer lab was learning disabilites so we tried writing with the wrong hand, Room 29 was fine motor so you did stuff like we didn’t have hands or legs, Library speech and language we got to play on I pods( only on speech apps), Library there was a hearing station where we learned about sign language and conference room was Cognition where we got to evaluate our selves. I was strong in the math area. The day was awesome because we got to go around doing stuff and it was fun. I learned a lot about how people function differently.
