Star Dome

Hello Str00m30 blog readers!
Have you ever been to a star dome? How about going in a star dome with a group of your best friends? Well that’s what we did today!
There was a star dome in the school gym today, and classes took turns going in and listening to stories in them. There was a man named Darren, and he guided us through old tales of the stars and how it came to be.
We listened to him tell a story about a winter that never ended. The squirrel thought that the summer birds brought summer, but the birds hadn’t come back. Squirrel went looking for them, and found a cave. He looked into the cave and he heard the bird singing a beautiful song. He followed the song and at the end he saw the summer birds. The winter god had trapped the summer birds, so that summer cannot come back over the land. The birds were tied up in some thin string, but it was too thick to break free of. Squirrel came over to the birds and chewed all of the string off, and the birds flew as fast as they could out of there.  Squirrel was to slow to come out of the cave and the winter god started to chase him at the sight of him coming out of the cave. Squirrel climbed up the top of the tree, but the winter god shot an arrow, and barely hit the squirrel and squirrel flew up into the air. Squirrel got pinned to the top of the sky, and now can be seen as what we commonly call, the big dipper.
I loved doing this activity. I hope we can do it again. It was like having a planetarium in our school!

Pourquoi Tale Presentations

Today we went to see a few classes do their Pourquoi tale presentations in room 33. Have you ever seen one performed live? Today we watched 6 Pourquoi tale presentations. The first one we watched was our little buddies in grade 1. They did how the deer got its antlers and it was good. Mrs. Wallace’s class did how the black bear got its color! For both the gr.2 and gr.1’s they had two gr.6’s narrating. Lucas and Maxelmae and Terry and Amy were the narrators. The next class was 3M/D and they did why the beaver has a flat tail and it was really good.  After the gr. 3’s then 4D went and they did why wolves howl at the moon they also did a good job on the narrating because they spoke loud. After that it was our turn and we are doing how the buffalo got its horns and our narrators are Hunter and Alex. The animal that I played was the helpful beaver but I had to play beaver too because Colin is away. That was it for the morning but we did more in the afternoon. In the afternoon we saw Mrs. Henry’s class and narrating for them was Ashleigh and Dana. We also saw Ms. Wasney’s class and they had really good masks. The part I enjoyed the most was probably the masks. Wow what a great way to end our AAA project with these great presentations! Here is a video of our Pourquoi Tale.

TWAS

Building our Classroom Matrix
This week we made a class matrix for our class room. It is like our playground expectations and lunch room expectations. The categories are Be Safe Be Responsible Be Respectful. Here are some examples for the categories this is two for Be Safe: Use tools properly and hands and feet to yourself. These are two for Be Responsible is be ready to learn and complete your work. These are two for Be Respectful. Listen to the speaker and be kind to others. The three expectations that I suggested are… Don’t chew gum like a cow and use kind words and always make others feel welcome.


Sleepy Buffalo
 
This is another thing we are working on for the two weeks. Every year we have this AAA thing and you have to have a story that you have to make up your self and you have to give the story a meaning. So this year we had the story of how the Buffalo got is horns! The character I am is Sleepy Buffalo. He has the part where I am sleeping and the two animals helpful Wolf and Helpful Rabbit has to put the horns on me and then I turn over and it looks like I am waking up and they finished their mission and put the other horn on. So why they are putting on the horns is there is a bear that is scaring all of the animals and they have had enough of getting scared. And some of the animals have come up with the idea of having horns on buffalo. But buffalo says I don’t want horns on my head! But they need horns on him because he is the biggest animal and the strongest animal. So in his sleep like I said they have to put horns on me! Then when he wakes up and he runs right past bear and he scares bear! And bear feels terrible because now he knows how all of the animals have felt. So he said I will never scare another animal. AND THAT IS HOW THE BUFALO GOT ITS HORNS!
This week we had our first EP project presentation and this was the first person to go it was Braden and his was on all of the future stuff. The name of the EP was called C.E.S and that stands for consumer electronic show and it was cool and it was about… New awesome cars new vacuums and even new shopping! That is really awesome and that is basically what he did and he also told us about this new movie player it is called the Red Ray and you even have a button  that makes it 3D!

 This month is February and we have a new attendance thing on the smart board. It is an arrow shooting your name to a heart. The arrow has your name on it.

Mask Making

For our AAA project each class wrote a Pourquoi Tale. First each class picks a question and in your story you have to answer your question. All the questions are about animals. Our classes question is how the buffalo got its horns. In your story there are two rules: no humans and the animals have to be Manitoba animals. After you write your story you get to make masks for your animal. Before we made our animals we had to sketch it out. We got to pick our animals. Some people have to make their animal have an expression. My animal is the buffalo and I don’t have to make an expression. There are five people playing the buffalo but just different expressions. There was lots of craft stuff to use. I used wool for the fur, beads for the eyes, cardboard for the ears, and a container, ribbon, and tissue paper for the snout. There were lots of other things you could use too like feathers, bells, egg cartons, cotton balls, pastels, Styrofoam balls, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, and jewels. Lots of people were really creative and used lots of different materials. Soon we will be presenting our story to different classes and going to see different class’s stories. I can’t wait to see what the other classes stories are!      By Renee

Scotiabank Skater Contest

Scotiabank SkatersCalling all hockey fans! Ms Wasney informed me that the Scotiabank Skater Contest is back. If you are between the ages of 7-14 and would like to have the opportunity to lead the Winnipeg Jets onto the ice and line up with them on the blue line for the national anthem than you should have a parent enter the contest here. You could also win Jets merchandise, a home jersey and 4 tickets to the game. Wow, what an experience that would be. The contest runs from January 17 - April 1, 2013. Good luck!!


 

Abilities Awareness Day

Today we had an Abilities awareness day. There were seven stations that taught you about other people’s different abilities. In the front foyer Mrs. Lester came In with some wheelchairs, but before we got to ride them she showed us a power point on what different things people used to get around. Some of them were wheelchair, scooter, walker and a cane. Some people just use a cane and a walker for balance because they can’t balance that good. After the power point we got to pick partners and go on an obstacle course. We had to go down the hallway, get a drink of water then go up the ramp coming from the outside doors, turn around and the go down. When we got down we had to go into the handicapped bathroom and close the door the after that you had to open the door and it was hard. We had to go down the hallway and go in and out and in of the front entrance (we have two sets of doors) and then we had to switch with a partner. Remember we had to open doors and move the wheelchair with only our hands!
In room 8 we had a lesson on Vision. We all got in to groups.  Ryan.W, Cam and I were in a group.  Everybody got goggles that had a special amount of vision. There wasn’t enough goggles to go around so we got to go into the hallway and we took turns blind folding each other and “being blind.” We had a stick to navigate where we were and one of us made a buzzing sound with a battery and a buzzer. Then we had to go back to room 8 and let another group try.
And the other stations were:  Computer lab was learning disabilites so we tried writing with the wrong hand, Room 29 was fine motor so you did stuff like we didn’t have hands or legs, Library speech and language we got to play on I pods( only on speech apps), Library there was a hearing station where we learned about sign language and conference room was Cognition where we got to evaluate our selves. I was strong in the math area. The day was awesome because we got to go around doing stuff and it was fun. I learned a lot about how people function differently.

T.W.A.S.

Waz up room 30 readers and this is what happened this week in Birds Hill School…
This week we had a Snowmobile Safety Presentation and this person taught us a LOT about having to stop when a train is coming, signs with your arm. The person who showed us this presentation was named Chris. He showed us that you have to have a SnoPass in order to ride on a groomed trail. For a year having a Snopass its $125 but for a 7 day pass its $60.50, the fine for not having a Snopass is $474.15. You have to be very safe because snowmobiles are very fast.
On Tuesday we did Gym with the grade 6 class and we played steel the treasure. This is how you play: you have to run over to the other side and grab a bean bag and run back. If you get caught you go to jail. Someone from your team has to tag you to get you out of jail.
This is all I can write today because I am leaving early to go to a hockey tournament! Have a great weekend everyone.

AAA Project


A talking stick helped us to
take turns sharing ideas.

Hello room 30 readers. Right now we are working on AAA (Aboriginal Academic Achievement) story telling project. Every class will be writing a pour quoi tale. Our topic was about how the buffalo got its horns. Do you know? We all got to write our own ideas of how we thought the buffalo got its horns. We had a kick off assembly to introduce the project and get us excited! We also had a guest speaker who was an Aboriginal story teller. He told us how he became a story teller and had to get up any time of the day and listen to the story and then memorize the story. On Thursday we will be meeting with Mr. Kapilik and Miss. Mitchell to write our class story. Lots of the class mates had really good ideas of how the buffalo got his horns. Next week we as a class will be making masks to go with the characters in our story. We will be practicing telling our story soon and present it to other classes. I`m looking forward to doing the presenting of the story! Stay tuned for more information.

TWAS

Dear blog readers this week at school we did…
We did a craft called New Year’s crackers. How would you make them? Good question this is how: you get a toilet paper roll and tissue paper. You rap the tissue paper around toilet paper roll, to keep it from unrolling you can use clear tape to keep it on or use sticky labels with your resolution on it, and you can tie it with string or pipe cleaners. This very easy to make you can also use it as a goodie bag you just need a bigger toilet paper roll.
We learned about petroglyphs. Petroglyphs are pictures that are drawn on animal hides and rocks. So what we did is we had a piece of paper with symbols on it. You had to think of what the symbols would be from when they used it. We had to make a story with only symbols and no words. I told a story about my birthday party and this Christmas.
In math we read a book called Great Estimations. In the book you had to estimate things like how many strawberries or how many people in a swimming pool and stuff like that. Estimation is a number that you don’t know and you try to guess what it is. Everyone can estimate but a great estimation is when you are really close to the number like 5 over 5 under the number. That book was very good book I recommend it if you want to improve on estimating.

Welcome to 2013!

 Some of the kids might of not wanted to come back to school but I was so excited! I got to see all my friends again and even wish them all a Happy New Year! On Monday we did a New Year's Resolution page. We had to make resolution for School, Home and for something else you wanted to pick. I chose Hockey for my extra resolution! We also wrote a few paragraphs about our Christmas and our New Year! My Christmas was so amazing, it was the best Christmas I ever had! Everyone in our class shared one thing that they did over the holidays or one thing they got for Christmas! Room 30 is looking forward to a fantastic 2013. Stay tuned to what we will be doing in class!
