Science Design Projects

Our forces and motion design projects are AWESOME! Some of them are big and some are small. This design needed to set a marble in motion with no hands, have potential and kinetic energy, have linear, oscillating, rotational or reciprocating motion and come to a complete stop every time. It also needed change speed and direction. The projects needed to be built with recycled materials at school. For example, you could use toilet paper rolls and cardboard. There were so many steps to make them. Everybody was working hard to complete their projects. These projects took about a week to be done. Our class got to go to the other grade 5 class to see their projects and their class came to ours to see our projects. Their projects were so cool. Now that we are done testing, someone will have to take the project home. The best part of the project was building it and designing it, because I like to build stuff and design. Some people had to make a lot of changes, and that’s what good designers do. We also had to say what our design could be used for in real life.

Design Projects

We have being working on a design project. We worked in groups to make a weather vane. My group was Anna, Alyssa, Braelyn and I. The first time we tested it the arrow pointed the opposite way the wind was coming from. We used a blow dryer as the wind. The wind or the blow dryer would go at two different speeds, one wasn’t that strong, and the other one is stronger. We only got to use special materiel’s like, one wooden dowel , one meter of masking tape, one chunk of plasticine , four straight pins, a ruler, four straws, one piece of manila tag paper, scissors, markers, and a pencil. Our group tested at least four times. All we needed to do was put a circle at the end of one straw and then it was stable and the right end was pointing the right way. I enjoyed making the project with my group. I cant wait for the next design project! By, Keanna

Forces and Motion Design Projects

Hello room 30 blog readers! This week and last week we started making design projects for forces and motion for science. First we planned it all in our log books, and then we drew what it would look like and labeled it, and write what supplies you will need. When we started building if we made any changes we would record it and then say why because otherwise the next day we might forget it. The criteria in the log book was that you had to create a design that will set a ball in motion without you touching it, change its direction and speed and come to a controlled stop. My designs name was AWESOME! Hunters design was called down the drain Hunters group used a simple machine called a pulley. We really liked designing the project. Caine's Arcade

Ms Wasney reminded me about a video we watched last year featuring a nine year old boy who made an arcade out of cardboard! We have been working hard on our design projects for forces and motion and this seems like perfect timing. Watch and be amazed! This will put a smile on your face. Let your imagination fly. . . . .

Design Project: Weather Vanes

In science we have been learning about weather and wind, so as a class we got to make weather vanes. The weather vanes had to have the four cardinal directions and a base they also had to represent a skydiving company. Every student had a logbook, and in the logbook it had questions, materials you had to use, there was also space for you to draw your sketch and (label) it. But first came planning, we started the project on Nov.5^th and ended it on Nov.13^th. In the planning section it said “This is a very important part of designing! "  

In the problem section it said… you are working for a local skydiving company and have been ask, to make an instrument to determine wind direction. You need to make a weather vane to meet the following criteria. My group was named Sky Masters, and the people in my group was Felicia and Riley and of course me. If you’re wondering how we tested it let me tell you, Mrs. Tresoor brought a blow dryer to school and then we put our weather vane on the table then she tried it at low speed and at the high speed and ours worked. It worked by the air blowing into the straw and out of the back. When Mrs. Tresoor stood at north the arrow would point into the blow dryer.   

 It was an awesome science project. I really liked making the weather vane.                                       By Melina
