T.W.A.S.

This week at school we had a very busy week. First things first prezi. Prezi’s a tool you use to make a presentation. I used it to make one on avalanches. I think I did a pretty good job for the first time using it. I even learned how to insert videos into my presentation. It’s really easy once you get the hang of it. Also this week we had little buddies! We did a craft we made stars. The stars were made of pipe cleaners, straws and beads. I think they looked nice. I hope we get to do more fun crafts. After we showed the teacher/Mrs.tresoor we got a candy cane each. In Writers workshop this week we did our holiday traditions. One of mine are going to my grandma’s house and playing secret Santa. After that we have a big dinner. Also every year we decorate the tree. Even if the tree is too small or too big. Also this week we did art. We were making something for Christmas. All I can tell you is…its very colourful. Oh and it took a long time to make we are still working on them. I think my mom’s going to love mine. Oh and tomorrow we are all going to the gym to sing Christmas carols. I hope we sing for a long time like forever. Tomorrow is the last day of school until January 6th. I hope tomorrow will be fun. Merry Christmas! By Mikayla

I Love Skiing!

Getting ready to ski.
We want skiing in gym class, we had to find out our boot size. My size is 39. After we got our boots we got to grab our skis. We measured our skis by our wrists. The tip of the skis should be up to our wrist. We want in the back field to go skiing. We practiced gating up after we fell in the snow. When you fall put your skis side by side then you get your hands on the ground and push yourself back up. Cross country skiing is really easy and fun.

Practicing getting up from a fall.
Great day for skiing.

Our Class Pet

Our class pet his name is Jeff and he is full of beans. We all voted for the name Jeff and there were a lot of names but Jeff was number one. I was the creator of him. I thought of the name Jeff and I said this is the right name. I think some of the people in my class disagreed but again a lot of people in my class liked the name. When I heard we had a class pet I was very excited then the name popped into my head… Jeff! Then at that moment Mrs.Tresoor said here is a paper to put the names you think of and I raced to Mrs. Tresoor’s desk. I think I was the first one at the her desk and at that moment I was hoping the name Jeff would win. Then close to the end of the day we voted on the names and that’s how Jeff got his name. Now he loves his name that I gave him and he loves his life. Welcome to our classroom Jeff!!

T.W.A.S.

Wow it was an amazing Christmas concert! I can’t wait to tell you about it. I saw the other class perform on Tuesday. It was awesome. I think they did so well. The next day on Wednesday we had ours. It was good. I was the person at the front handing out the programs with Alyssa. I liked it and I think Alyssa liked doing that too. But we had a system. it was when I handed out one I said welcome the great hall and Alyssa would say enjoy the concert then if she handed out one she would say welcome to the great hall and I would say enjoy the concert. And then the concert came on it was amazing!

Its field trip time. For our field trip we made hampers. We packed one hamper for a family of two one little boy and one mom. We put food toys, mittens, spider man P.J’s. Then we made some boxes so they don’t look so plain. I enjoy doing that for people to get a Christmas like me.

Now its little buddies my favourite. My little buddy was not there till we had to leave sadly but I got Brookes buddy Maxx. It’s funny my buddies name is Maddox and Brookes is Maxx. It’s cute but I still got to read to a buddy. They are so cute. I’m glad he’s my buddy.

T.W.A.S.

I'm dressed warm for the weather!
This week at school we had gym and we got to go snowshoeing. It was so much fun. We got to learn how to put them on and off. When we got outside Mrs. Rand said put them on and then go in the field and walk around. When the whistle blew we had to come to Mrs. Rand. Snowshoeing was so much fun. Next time we are going to go skiing. I can’t wait.

The next thing we did was temperature graph. We got a new temperature graph. This time we do the current temperature and the wind chill. The temperature was -32 degrees Celsius with the wind chill. The wind chill makes it really cold like today. Brrrrr it was so cold dress warm everyone!
Next we did was holiday traditions. It was so fun we had to write what does it sounds like, what does it look like, what does it smell like, What does it taste like, people we see, and things we do. Christmas traditions I do my self is open presents and have family come over to have supper. I’m looking forward to the holidays but I will really miss school especially I will miss Mrs. Tresoor.

Birch Tree Artwork

In art we made birch trees. The first step was we had to make tree shapes out of masking tape. Some of us cut the tape to make a thinner trunk. Then out of extra pieces of tape we would make our branches. After that was done we would paint the background with water colour paints but we couldn’t paint to the bottom because the bottom would be our snow. Then we put salt on the paint to give it a cool effect. Once the paint dried we would peel off the tape. After we peeled off the tape we would use pastels but we could only use the black and the grey. First we would use the black and draw lines on the trunk and the branches to make it look like a birch tree. Then we would use the grey to make it have the shadow effect. If we wanted we could add snowflakes. To put the snowflakes we would use a Q-tip or the end of a paint brush. They look so amazing! You can check them out in our hallway and also on Artsonia.

T.W.A.S.

This week at school we played a game called koosh ball. How you play is you throw a rubber object at the smart board and it would hit a circle. It would give you a multiplication question. You answer the question. To check if you got it right you tape on the smart board. I got to throw the rubber thing at the smart board only one time because everyone wanted a try.

This week we also had a volleyball tournament at Dr. Hamilton School. The kids on my team were Brody, Jordan, Nick M, Nat and Ryan S. Not to brag but I have a wicked serve that almost always went over the net. I did make a few good bumps that went over the net and the other team was not able to get it back over the net.

This week we also played a game with cards called multiplication war. My partner was Brody. And something funny about the game was we got a war at the very last two cards. We both got twenty. So we took cards from our pile of cards and I actually won the war. Then Mrs. Tresoor got us to put it on Instagram. It is a picture of the war we had and Brody’s hands look like his is sobbing in sadness and my hands are like yes I win so it is a really funny photo.

We also had this week a gym class where we run laps around the gym, S well you are running your partner was counting how many laps you did. My partner was Jerrett. He got twenty six laps but I only got twenty two or four I don’t remember. On my run I came in second because Ryan got twenty six like Jerrett. But I am still happy because I got second place. It is like getting a silver medal in the Olympics. But we are in school not they Olympics.

Multiplication War

In math we are trying to learn our multiplication facts. So, we are playing a math card game. It is called multiplication war. It’s just like normal war except you take out the kings, queens and the jacks, and ace is one. Instead of just putting one card down, you put down two cards and multiply them. The player with the highest product gets all four cards. If you get the same product, you place three more cards face down and then place two more cards and multiply them. Whoever gets the highest product gets all the cards. It’s a fun way to practice our facts! – By: Brooke

T.W.A.S.

This week at school we did a science project! It was a weather vane, we could only use manila paper,1 meter of masking tape, a wooden dowel, 4 pins, clay, 4 straws, scissors, a ruler and a pencil. It was a group project. Keanna, Braelyn and Alyssa are in my group. We used our clay as our base. Then we taped the directions North, East, South, West. Then we put our arrow on and we put the tape on and made it so no side was sticky so we could attach it to the arrow so it would spin. The arrow had to face into the wind. The wind was Mrs. Tresoor`s blow dryer. The first time we went up it did not spin then we made a few changes and then we went up again and then it did not work so we had to change our idea. Then when I went up again it worked because we put a pin in the middle of the straw and put paper in with the clay. Our sky diving name was sky zone weather drop.

This week at school we did peace art. It was a dove. We had to colour around our finger and make bigger and bigger circles. Then we were done and we had to put what peace smell like feels like and tastes like. For peace tastes like I put peace tastes like fresh homemade sushi!

This week at school we did I.B.L. I am researching water spouts. Mrs.Dent Scarcello and Mrs Tresoor teach us I.B.L. I find mostly all of my information in books. I found a little amount in websites. I am really excited for our finished project. For our final project Mrs. Dent Scarcello showed us a website that makes online flyers. It is called Smore. I don’t think I will use it because I want to see more options.

Next week I am really excited for the volleyball tournament on Monday!

Design Projects

We have being working on a design project. We worked in groups to make a weather vane. My group was Anna, Alyssa, Braelyn and I. The first time we tested it the arrow pointed the opposite way the wind was coming from. We used a blow dryer as the wind. The wind or the blow dryer would go at two different speeds, one wasn’t that strong, and the other one is stronger. We only got to use special materiel’s like, one wooden dowel , one meter of masking tape, one chunk of plasticine , four straight pins, a ruler, four straws, one piece of manila tag paper, scissors, markers, and a pencil. Our group tested at least four times. All we needed to do was put a circle at the end of one straw and then it was stable and the right end was pointing the right way. I enjoyed making the project with my group. I cant wait for the next design project! By, Keanna

Remembrance Day Service

Papa Jack and his medals
Papa Jack, me and Grandma Lois
Today we had our Remembrance Day service. It was about a half hour long and very good. The choirs sang songs like Sing a song of peace and may peace reign forever and we listened to a song called pittance of time. I think that was one of the best songs in the service. One of the other things that happened was a lady representing the Canadian legion spoke about how the poppy came to be a symbol of Remembrance Day.

After the assembly my grandparents came to the classroom. They talked about where my grandpa went during the war. The class asked questions and they answered them. It was nice to have them come by. The men and women that served in the military should always be remembered.

We Scare Hunger and Unicef

The SPIN Club helped to organize the We Scare Hunger Campaign for Free the Children. Students were asked to bring in non-perishable food items for Winnipeg Harvest. Today the members helped to weigh the items and we were thrilled to find out that our total was 477 pounds(216 kilograms)! WOW! Thanks to the BHS community for supporting this great cause. The items are being picked up on Thursday, November 7 by Winnipeg Harvest.
Our class raised $194.55 for Unicef. Way to go Room 30!! We reached and surpassed our goal of $100. Our school brought in $2 406.36 --- awesome results.

Hmmmmm, what could these words be?
This week at school we had a presentation on recycling!! Dana and Kent came to our school to teach us about why recycling is so important! They did a play on recycling it was super funny!! Kent was throwing parties and he didn’t clean up the bottles and cans!! So Dana got so mad because she was doing a project on recycling and all these bottles could be something so cool!! But they just were going to waste! So Dana started thinking of ways to make Kent understand why recycling is so important! Then one of the bands Kent wanted to host wanted a zero footprint place to perform! But Kent didn’t know what that meant!! So in Kent’s book of party planning for dimwits he finally found out that zero footprints means not polluting and thinking about what we can do to save energy and make our earth a better place! Then Kent started recycling!! It was a really good presentation! And they were so funny!!

Also at school something that was so fun was word work I love word work it’s one of my favourite things at school! Maddie, Anna and I stayed in at first and didn’t find we started to get frustrated because we wanted to find it so bad!! So we kept trying and trying we stayed in again at last Jenny helped to and we all worked together to found it!! We had so many different ways of trying to find it! I was on the white board Maddie and Jenny were using a dictionary to find it I was on the white board Anna was moving letters around and finally Maddie and jenny found it so we were all so happy!! Can you find the word??

Another really cool activity of the week was having little buddies for the first time!! My little buddy is Nathan!! We read transformers! He really likes the transformers! Then he read two books to me! It was so fun I hope we will go back soon!! Nathan is so awesome and he is a really good reader! I don’t remember being able to read that good when I was in grade 1! I hope we will read again next time it’s so fun to have a little buddy! I remember when I was in grade one my brother Ben was my big buddy!

Green Kids!

This morning we had a recycling presentation from Green Kids. The grade 4-6 classes met in the gym for a drama presentation about recycling. The people who did the presentation, their names were Kent and Dana. There were some kids from some of the grades 4s, 5s and 6s who volunteered to be part of a skit. The skit was about an outdoor concert and everyone would grab their drinks, and when they were done drinking them, they would throw their drinks over their shoulder, and leave. Then Gus threw everything in the garbage. Gertie explained that he needed to recycle instead of throwing everything in the garbage. These are some of the people who did the skit: Brooke, Madison, Emily s., Hannah, Allison, Renee, Mathew, Mathew, Ashley, Riley, Nathan and Braden. D.

We were 1 of 3 classes to have Kent and Dana come to our room and do a workshop. We got to do a lot of improvisation. We learned about what we can recycle, the process of recycling and what recycled things can turn into. It was an awesome time. Remember to recycle! Thanks Mrs. Dent Scarcello for getting Dana and Kent to come to our school.

T.W.A.S.

This week at school we did art. In art we made Halloween Silhouettes. First we had to paint a sunset background. We had to cut out black Halloween shapes. Mine has a haunted house, pumpkin, cat, and a ghost.

I also had the flag football tournament. In practices we had six teams but at the tournament we only had three so they had to combine teams. My team was called the Lions. My team got combined with the black team so Jolene was on my team. Mrs Rand was our coach. On the last game we were versing the other Birds Hill team so we did on shift of all grade sixes then all grade fives. At the tournament there were two Blue Bomber players. Most of us got something signed. My team played five or six games. It was really fun.

Mrs Tresoor showed us a water cycle demo. She used hot water and ice cubes to show us. She used the kettle to heat up the water like evaporation. As the steam rose it was like water vapour. The ice cubes were over top of the kettle so as the water vapour rose it was getting colder and water droplets formed like condensation. The water started to drop like rain. That’s precipitation.

It was a short week but we did a lot. - By Madison

Helping Others

The students at BHS are busy working together to help others in need. Our SPIN Club is supporting a Free the Chilrdren campaign called We Scare Hunger. They are asking for non-perishable food items to be brought to the school for Winnipeg Harvest. Have you been listening to the morning announcements? Information is being shared with the school to encourage everyone to bring in food items. The top 10 items needed are: 1: canned fish and poultry, 2: canned fruit and vegetables, 3: canned stew, chili, brown beans, 4: peanut butter, 5: baby food, 6: pasta, 7: rice, 8: canned spaghetti sauce or tomatoes, 9: cereal, 10: canned soup. We will be collecting food until the end of October.

Also Ms Wasney's class is running the Unicef campaign. Information was sent out to let you know how you can donate to support this great cause. Last year our school was one of Manitoba's top 3 fundraisers for Unicef. Wow, that's amazing! Donation forms are due November 1.

I know these great campaigns will be supported by our kind and caring BHS community!

Classroom Matrix

The students in room 30 have created a classroom matrix. Our matrix explains the expectations we feel we need to follow to be safe, responsible and respectful in our classroom. It was great to have such positive student input. The matrix is posted in our room so we can refer to it daily. Keep following expectations everyone! I'm proud of your hard work to make our classroom an awesome learning environment.

T.W.A.S.

This week at school we had gym. In gym we did lots of running, 6 minutes to be exact. We also had partners, my partner was Brody. He ran first and got 26 laps. Next it was my turn. When the teacher said go, I sort of sprinted for the whole time. I got 24 laps and I was not feeling good afterward.

In art were doing name art. This name art is spelling your name but you put it in a fancy form. Mine is good but Nicks is better. His is just brighter and more colourful. But mine still looks good.

In science we were learning about the water cycle. The water cycle works when the Sun evaporates the water. When the water goes up it gets colder and colder until the water turns back to liquid. That’s called ‘Condensation’ when that happens they turn into clouds. When the clouds get heavier until they can`t hold anymore and it rains. By Andrew

Thanksgiving Leaves

Today we did art and writing. In art we did leaves. It was kind of hard. We had to cut the leaf out then pick are colours then cut them again then we would glue them to the big leaf. I did all the colours that there were. There was red, yellow, brown, beige, green, and orange. Nick did all of the colours too. Mrs.Tresoor had to help a lot of kids because it was so hard to do. When I was done I swept. We wrote what we are thankful for in each section of the leaf. I’m thankful for my family I live with, the house I live under, the school I learn at, the friends I play with and having fresh food and clean water. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! - By Leah

Education for Change Speaking Tour

On Friday Bird's Hill School welcomed two special guests, Tina and O'Neil from Free the Children. They are part of the Education for Change Speaking Tour and are in our province to share their passion for social change and empowering youth. They are visiting nine schools in Manitoba and we are the only school in the River East Transcona School Division to have this opportunity!

To kick off our morning, the grade five and six students were part of a keynote presentation where Tina and O'Neil got us thinking about how we can make a difference by helping others less fortunate than ourselves. They spoke about how knowledge is power and that all children have a right to an education. After the presentation 24 grade six S.P.I.N. Club members participated in a workshop where students had time to think about what their passion was and to share their opinions about social issues. Wow, what an awesome day full of energy and important messages. We thank Tina and O'Neil for inspiring us to believe we can make a difference. Our S.P.I.N. Club members can't wait to get started on our first campaign . . . We Scare Hunger!

T.W.A.S.

This week at school we had the Terry Fox run. We ran in the field. Grades 4 to 6 had to run the WHOLE field. Grades K to 3 ran half the field. I think I ran about 5 laps. It was so hot out. Before we ran we watched a video about Terry Fox. It’s called “Try the Impossible.”

We also did our pointillism. Mine is a rainbow with a field of flowers. I finished mine. It is very colourful. It looks AWESOME! Everyone else’s looks good too. Hopefully everyone will be done soon so we can put them on the bulletin board.

We had science. We watched a Bill Nye video. It was on climate and weather. He did an experiment. I think it was how to make rain. What you need is an empty coke bottle, some ice cubes and VERY hot water. What you do is you cut the bottle in half, and then put the hot water and the ice cubes in the bottom of the bottle. Then put the top half of the bottle in the bottom half, but upside down. Then you find out what happens. -By Brooke

Smile :)

We started our day with a SMILE! Ms Wasney picked up some cookies for us at Tim Horton's this morning. All the proceeds from the sale of the cookies go to the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. You still have a few days to purchase the chocolate chip smile cookies and help a great cause.  - Mrs. T :)
So yummy!

Terry Fox Run

Today we had the Terry Fox run. It was fun but it was very hot out. Everyone was sweating. Terry Fox was 18 when he found out he had cancer. They had to cut off his leg and he got an artificial leg. He ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry Fox ran a marathon every day. We ran in the field today for only 30 minutes. This is an important time to raise money for people in need and to remember Terry Fox.

T.W.A.S.

This week at school we were doing a type of art called pointillism. It is an art with all dots you are not allowed to draw any lines or colour it in it had to be with all dots. I was drawing a flower. Pointillism takes quite a long time because you have to do it with all dots and the page has to all be with all dots On Thursday we did math. What we did in math is we wanted to see how many dots we could make on a page in one minute. Are whole class made over five thousand dots. That is a lot of dots!! Mrs.Tresoor timed us we didn’t have to time are self’s. We also read the book one million dots by Andrew Clements. On Friday we did science. In science we are learning about the difference of the climate and the weather. We did a chart on the smart bored of what the climate is and what the weather is. We also did it on paper. We had to cut out the pieces and glue then on to your piece of paper. By: Keanna

Fun With Dots

This week we are talking about International Dot Day. We read a book called “The Dot.” The book was very interesting. It was about a girl who was in art class and how she thought she was not good at art/drawing. She was starting to get angry and just made a dot on her paper. When she came to school the next day the painting she made was framed above her teachers desk. We think this book is telling us you always have to try your best. Just get started and you never know what will happen. We designed our own dots. Mrs.Tresoor showed us an app called “ColAR Mix.” What you do is you take a picture of the dot and you press a button to make your dot come to life! Enjoy the video! By: Brooke and Mikayla

International Dot Day

September 15 is International Dot Day. This day is inspired by Peter H. Reynolds's book called The Dot, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It is a book that encourages the creativity to bloom in all of us. Can't wait to read the book to the class on Monday! Thanks Mrs. Dent Scarcello for letting us know about this fun day.

T.W.A.S.

Our first full week of school is over. We are getting to know each other more everyday. Karlee is our first T.W.A.S. blogger this year. Here is her T.W.A.S.......

This week at school we did name art. We had to think of things that describe me. Then we took a white piece of paper and started to do wavy lines across the page. We filled in all the lines with what describes me and we started with I am… then we went over the wavy lines with a thick sharpie marker. Last but not least we had to color the wavy lines that were the best part!

On Tuesday we had bus patrol training it was really fun. We had to go on a real bus and go over some of the rules and we had to help the little kids off the bus when we went to school and from school. But we weren’t actually on a bus. Then we went in to Mrs. Dyck’s class and we went over some of the stuff we learned.

Our class has an instagram account. It is really exciting. We get to post pictures and have to comment on what we took a picture of I posted a picture of rules at home. Then I had to comment on another teacher’s picture. So someone took a picture of waiting for the bus and I said I have to wait for the bus in the morning too! It was an awesome week!

What a year to remember!

Dear blog readers.

Crackers......open on June 28

On January 7th we made crackers. But not the kind of crackers you eat. With these crackers, you pull the ends to crack them open.  We wrote a New Year's resolution on the outside and we were allowed to put little things inside, make and decorate them with tissue paper. The supplies we used to make this were: pipe cleaners, toilet paper rolls, and tissue paper. Some people were surprised that Mrs.Tresoor actually remembered to bring them out, and others were surprised when they saw what they had put in there. Some people put some confetti inside, some people put fans inside, Hunter put in a paper duck, and Colin made a paper airplane to put inside.
Today (June28th) we got to sign autographs. Not because we are famous, but because it is the end of the year! We got to write messages or even just sign your name, some people wrote “Have a great summer”!  Some pages were completely full others weren’t. Everyone was running around to get people to sign their books. It was a great way to remember our friends!

Way, way back on the first day of school, we took a picture on our play-structure. Now on the last day of school (actually it was on the 27th), we took another picture. The reason we did this on the second last day was because everyone was there, and we knew for sure not everyone was going to be here on the last day of school. It was fairly hard to get into the exact same position, but most of our class managed. Alex’s position was hanging off of the pole, and Melina’s position was beside the pink ladder crouching next to Hunter.
First day of grade 5!

End of grade 5!
