Forces and Motion Design Projects

Hello room 30 blog readers! This week and last week we started making design projects for forces and motion for science. First we planned it all in our log books, and then we drew what it would look like and labeled it, and write what supplies you will need. When we started building if we made any changes we would record it and then say why because otherwise the next day we might forget it. The criteria in the log book was that you had to create a design that will set a ball in motion without you touching it, change its direction and speed and come to a controlled stop. My designs name was AWESOME! Hunters design was called down the drain Hunters group used a simple machine called a pulley. We really liked designing the project. It was so much fun drawing the final drawing of the design! Don’t change from this website stay tuned for more awesome posts. Enjoy watching the video.

Caine's Arcade

Ms Wasney reminded me about a video we watched last year featuring a nine year old boy who made an arcade out of cardboard! We have been working hard on our design projects for forces and motion and this seems like perfect timing. Watch and be amazed! This will put a smile on your face. Let your imagination fly. . . . .

Festival du Voyageur Field Trip

Hello Room 30 readers! Today we went to Festival du Voyageur with all the Grade 6 and Grade 5’s. It was so amazing. You wouldn’t believe how cool it was. My favourite part was looking at all the shocking ice sculptures people from all around the world came to make! The first place sculpture was a merry-go-round. Third place sculpture was two people who were cutting down trees! My second favourite part was eating pure Maple syrup that was frozen. We all went on a sleigh ride but before we learned about how Voyageurs traveled. It was a great day!   By Cam

Photo Booth Experience

Awesome bookmarks!
Hey what’s up room 30 blog readers? Yesterday we had a special event with our friends and little buddies. The photo booth was for I love to read month.  We posed with our little buddies. First we pointed at our eyes, and then we made a heart with your fingers, then we put up two fingers and finally we held up our books. The next day we got to go to the photo booth again but this time with our friends in grade 5. You could be with 2-4 people so I went with Hunter. The photo booth belonged to Ms. Wasney’s sister Leah. It was awesome we got our own personal bookmarks!!! Thanks to Leah for giving us these awesome gifts!   By Braden

Curling!

Hello blog readers! today I would like to give a special thank-you to Mrs. Rand and Mr. Hargreaves, for making a curling rink in the school yard. Luckily it was on the k-3 side not our side. Mr. Hargreaves and Mrs. Rand made and flooded the ice, and then Mrs. Rand painted the rings on the ice. After all that hard work it was ready to curl on. So far I think all the classes went curling. I am not positive on the kindergartners. Our class has gone about 4 to 5 times.  The hard part about curling is you don’t know how hard to throw the rock. There is an interesting thing about curling it relates to our science about forces and motion .You need a lot of force to throw the rock.

Cup Stacking Tournament

I am interviewing Renee Ulrich, class cup stacking record holder!

Renee practicing in class
before the tournament!
Renee, how did it feel to compete in the school cup staking tournament in front of almost the entire school?
I was really nervous but I’m glad I did it.
Did you find the cycle stack difficult?
It was difficult at first, but once you got the hang of it, it was pretty easy

Ready, set, go.........
Are you disappointed with your time of 29.61 seconds?
No, because that was my record!
What was the best part about cupstacking?
The best part was learning how to do the whole cycle.
Thanks Renee for your time. Congratulations on holding the class record and trying your best. You did a great job!

Fit-a-Thon

Hey guys On Friday we had our fit-a-thon at our school. It’s a thing where you bring in pledges and the class with the most pledges gets a pizza lunch. This is for one class in K-3 and 4-6 since we are in grade 5 we are in the 4-6 group. Most of us all really want pizza for one lunch but we have to have the most pledges. I’m really excited to see who wins since we haven’t got a winner yet. For the fit-a-thon day you were put into a random groups I was in a group with Jensen and Michael each grade would go separately so all the grade fives would go together so it would be our class and MS Wasneys class.  My group did 48 laps. This is a video Ms Wasney took of all of us running. There is also an animoto to watch! Enjoy the clips! By Braden

T.W.A.S.

This week at school….
We went to the star dome. A star dome is like a mini planetarium. When we were in there we got to listen to some stories and one of them (my favourite) was called the squirrel saved summer. Once there was a female squirrel noticed that it was still cold out. The north wind howled and squirrel thought the bird’s aret chirping.so squirrel went and searched up and down for days. But then one day squirrel found a cave and heard the birds in there she went deeper in to the cave and saw the birds tide up with little sting. She gnawed on the string to set them free. The birds got out on time but squirrel got spotted by the god of winter and squirrel got shot with a bow and arrow and got pined to the sky and you can see him at night he is  what you call the big dipper.
In I love to read month (February) we all got to wear a readable shirt.it was really neat to see everybody wearing a readable shirt. We also have another readable shirt day on the 22.some kid’s wore sport shirt or name cites and lots more.
In Fit-A-Thon I went loco why you may ask because everyone was so tried but me and my friend ran so many extra laps. I still what to run more. Everyone was looking at me and my friend weirdly. But I feel great.
In curling we played on an outdoor rink (in the school yard). It was cool to be able to be able to do it at the school for gym. I got one point for our team. It was hard to get the rock all the way across the rink. It took a lot of effort.
Have a good weekend Room 30 readers!!

Expert Projects

What’s up room 30 blog readers? I did the first expert project on CES it stands for consumer electronics show. In my CES presentation I talked about so many things like new cars, and new TVs, new technology and basically a lot of things that you will see in the future. Some things that you might see are the RED-RAY, the 8K TV, the transparent TV and my favourite is the duel screen. The duel screen is my favourite because if you are playing any multi-player game like a racing game or really anything that is split-screen it will merge it together. It looks really weird at your first glance. When it gets merged together you put on glasses that split your screen up into your full screen. The glasses also have ear buds in them so you can only hear what’s happening on your game or TV show. It’s also not just for games it’s for shows too if you want on TV. The 8K TV that I was telling you about earlier is kind of confusing so I’ll explain it a little bit. 8K means 8 THOUSAND rows of pixels but on your standard TV today it’s basically only 1000 rows of pixels.  So the 8K TV is 8 times better than your average TV.

Star Dome

Hello Str00m30 blog readers!
Have you ever been to a star dome? How about going in a star dome with a group of your best friends? Well that’s what we did today!
There was a star dome in the school gym today, and classes took turns going in and listening to stories in them. There was a man named Darren, and he guided us through old tales of the stars and how it came to be.
We listened to him tell a story about a winter that never ended. The squirrel thought that the summer birds brought summer, but the birds hadn’t come back. Squirrel went looking for them, and found a cave. He looked into the cave and he heard the bird singing a beautiful song. He followed the song and at the end he saw the summer birds. The winter god had trapped the summer birds, so that summer cannot come back over the land. The birds were tied up in some thin string, but it was too thick to break free of. Squirrel came over to the birds and chewed all of the string off, and the birds flew as fast as they could out of there.  Squirrel was to slow to come out of the cave and the winter god started to chase him at the sight of him coming out of the cave. Squirrel climbed up the top of the tree, but the winter god shot an arrow, and barely hit the squirrel and squirrel flew up into the air. Squirrel got pinned to the top of the sky, and now can be seen as what we commonly call, the big dipper.
I loved doing this activity. I hope we can do it again. It was like having a planetarium in our school!
Thank you for reading,
Alex

Pourquoi Tale Presentations

Today we went to see a few classes do their Pourquoi tale presentations in room 33. Have you ever seen one performed live? Today we watched 6 Pourquoi tale presentations. The first one we watched was our little buddies in grade 1. They did how the deer got its antlers and it was good. Mrs. Wallace’s class did how the black bear got its color! For both the gr.2 and gr.1’s they had two gr.6’s narrating. Lucas and Maxelmae and Terry and Amy were the narrators. The next class was 3M/D and they did why the beaver has a flat tail and it was really good.  After the gr. 3’s then 4D went and they did why wolves howl at the moon they also did a good job on the narrating because they spoke loud. After that it was our turn and we are doing how the buffalo got its horns and our narrators are Hunter and Alex. The animal that I played was the helpful beaver but I had to play beaver too because Colin is away. That was it for the morning but we did more in the afternoon. In the afternoon we saw Mrs. Henry’s class and narrating for them was Ashleigh and Dana. We also saw Ms. Wasney’s class and they had really good masks. The part I enjoyed the most was probably the masks. Wow what a great way to end our AAA project with these great presentations! Here is a video of our Pourquoi Tale.

Building our Classroom Matrix
This week we made a class matrix for our class room. It is like our playground expectations and lunch room expectations. The categories are Be Safe Be Responsible Be Respectful. Here are some examples for the categories this is two for Be Safe: Use tools properly and hands and feet to yourself. These are two for Be Responsible is be ready to learn and complete your work. These are two for Be Respectful. Listen to the speaker and be kind to others. The three expectations that I suggested are… Don’t chew gum like a cow and use kind words and always make others feel welcome.

Sleepy Buffalo

This is another thing we are working on for the two weeks. Every year we have this AAA thing and you have to have a story that you have to make up your self and you have to give the story a meaning. So this year we had the story of how the Buffalo got is horns! The character I am is Sleepy Buffalo. He has the part where I am sleeping and the two animals helpful Wolf and Helpful Rabbit has to put the horns on me and then I turn over and it looks like I am waking up and they finished their mission and put the other horn on. So why they are putting on the horns is there is a bear that is scaring all of the animals and they have had enough of getting scared. And some of the animals have come up with the idea of having horns on buffalo. But buffalo says I don’t want horns on my head! But they need horns on him because he is the biggest animal and the strongest animal. So in his sleep like I said they have to put horns on me! Then when he wakes up and he runs right past bear and he scares bear! And bear feels terrible because now he knows how all of the animals have felt. So he said I will never scare another animal. AND THAT IS HOW THE BUFALO GOT ITS HORNS!
This week we had our first EP project presentation and this was the first person to go it was Braden and his was on all of the future stuff. The name of the EP was called C.E.S and that stands for consumer electronic show and it was cool and it was about… New awesome cars new vacuums and even new shopping! That is really awesome and that is basically what he did and he also told us about this new movie player it is called the Red Ray and you even have a button  that makes it 3D!
